But the market is also messy. The phrase "manufacturer" gets used very loosely, freight and duty math can erase an apparent saving overnight, and after-sales support across borders is where most people get hurt.     Most reputable Indian players sit in the middle row: final assembly, aging test, calibration and service done locally, with LED lamp packages and driver ICs still sourced from the same global suppliers everyone uses. That is normal. The problem starts when someone charges you a premium for "local" without being able to show which parts are actually local. Ask for a bill of materials by line item. If they cannot give you one, or they give you one with brand names blanked out, you have your answer.

    A second point people miss: pitch availability. India's domestic volume is heavily concentrated in P3.9, P4.8, P6, P8 and P10 — the event and outdoor hoarding market. Fine-pitch indoor stuff like P1.2, P1.5, P1.8 and even P2.6 is available, but often built to order with longer lead times and sometimes using imported fine-pitch modules anyway.     Where the actual factories and integrators are

    Geography matters more than you think, because it determines who can send an engineer to your site by tomorrow morning.

    • Delhi–NCR (Okhla, Naraina, Wazirpur, Noida, Gurgaon): the biggest concentration of integrators and rental houses. Strong on events, retail and corporate lobbies. A lot of the "manufacturer" websites you find are headquartered here.

    • Gujarat (Ahmedabad, Surat): a serious manufacturing cluster, increasingly where the actual cabinet and module assembly happens. Prices here tend to be sharper than in Delhi.

    • Kolkata, Chandigarh, Kochi: mostly regional integrators and dealers rather than assembly plants.

    If your screen is going into a Mumbai mall, buying from a Delhi company is fine as long as they have a Mumbai crew. If they subcontract everything and have never seen your site, the travel cost will appear somewhere in the invoice eventually, usually disguised as "miscellaneous."

    Two things we see go wrong repeatedly. First, resolution follows size, not the other way round. A 4 m × 3 m P3.9 wall gives roughly 1,024 × 768 pixels. That is not Full HD. If the client wants native 1080p, the wall needs to be closer to 7.5 m × 4.2 m. Decide the resolution you need, then let the physical size follow. We had a job where the structure went up first and everyone noticed afterwards that the presentation slides looked soft. Nobody won that argument.

    Second, power consumption. Ask for average draw, not peak. Peak figures are basically never reached with normal content, and building management will size cables and breakers off whatever number you hand them. Also plan for heat behind the wall — a 20 sqm indoor wall can dump several kilowatts into a small plant room, and then someone wonders why the screen starts throwing errors in May.

    Ballpark levels for supply plus basic installation, Indian market, domestic projects. These move with currency, duty and LED package pricing, so treat them as anchors, not promises.

    • Budget tier: roughly ₹18,000–₹35,000 per sqm. Generic lamps, basic cabinet, minimal QC. Acceptable for back-of-house displays and temporary setups.

    • Mid tier: roughly ₹35,000–₹70,000 per sqm. Decent LEDs, good driver IC, 3-year warranty, better colour consistency. This is where most sensible buyers land.

    • Premium / national brand: ₹70,000–₹1,40,000+ per sqm. Calibration reports, engineering support, stocked spares, faster response times.

    For outdoor hoardings and building-face screens, pricing is often per square foot or per cabinet, and the structure plus permissions become a bigger share of the total than the display itself.

    Then add the layers that always get left off the first quote: structure or truss, rigging labour, controller and processor, cabling and distribution boards, content creation, access-hour premiums, and taxes. A working rule of thumb is that all-in cost lands somewhere between 1.4× and 2× the bare screen price. If a quotation looks suspiciously complete at exactly the screen price, ask point blank what is excluded.

    Payment terms: 30–50% advance with balance on completion or against delivery is standard. Anyone asking for 100% upfront before you have seen a single reference install goes to the bottom of the list.

    3. Ask for dated aging-test photos. A wall running 48–72 hours continuously, with today's date visible. A live video walk-through is better; if the camera "cannot connect" or "the line is under maintenance," file that away.

    4. Ask for two reference installs from the last 18 months, ideally similar to your use case, and actually visit or call them. A showroom demo tells you almost nothing; a two-year-old installation tells you everything.

    5. Confirm who installs. Their own crew or subcontractors. Subcontractors are fine as long as one named person owns the outcome.

    Q: Should I buy from India or stick with China?
    A: It depends where the screen lives. If the installation is in India, a local supplier usually wins on service speed, warranty honouring and avoiding import duty and customs delay. If the screen is going into Hong Kong or Southeast Asia, a Guangdong factory will typically be cheaper and faster, with far more experience exporting and packing for sea freight. The hardware is largely commoditised now; you are really buying response time.

    Q: How long does it actually take?
    A: For a standard indoor order, plan roughly 2–4 weeks for production plus installation time; longer for fine pitch or custom shapes. Add shipping time if it is cross-border. Rush jobs happen, but rushing is how you end up with colour mismatch between cabinet batches. If someone promises a full wall in five days, ask what they are pulling off the shelf.

    Q: Rental cabinets or fixed install?
    A: Rental cabinets are heavier and cost more per square metre, but they survive being moved, stacked and toured, and they usually offer front-and-rear service.     Q: Can my own contractor do the install?
    A: Structurally and electrically, yes, if they have done LED walls before. Calibration and colour matching across cabinets is not something you pick up from a video tutorial. At minimum, have the supplier's engineer handle commissioning, even if you pay a day rate.

    Things specific to buying across borders

    A few items that do not show up in spec sheets but show up in invoices.

    • Duty and customs. Importing a finished screen into India attracts duty; importing into Hong Kong generally does not, but re-export paperwork still needs handling. Get the HS code and the duty rate confirmed in writing before you compare prices, otherwise you are comparing two different numbers.

    • Voltage and plugs. India uses 230 V / 50 Hz. Hong Kong uses 220 V / 50 Hz with British-style plugs and BS standards for wiring. Confirm the configuration at order and confirm cable and termination standards match local code.

    • Spare parts on site. Cross-border warranty claims move slowly. Insist on a full spare kit — modules, power supplies, receiving cards, cables — held on site from day one. This single item fixes ninety percent of downtime without a phone call.

    • Documentation. Ask for calibration files, processor configuration backups, wiring diagrams and firmware versions in a folder handed over at commissioning. When something breaks at midnight, you want that folder, not a promise.

    • Language and time zone. Not a big issue between India and Hong Kong, but agree a named escalation contact and a response-time SLA in writing. "We will respond soon" is not an SLA.


    One thing nobody budgets for: content

    The wall is only as good as the file running on it. A great P2.6 playing a stretched 720p loop looks worse than a modest P4.8 playing a properly mastered file at native resolution. Budget for content creation and for a playback system that actually outputs the wall's native pixel count. Also avoid pure white static images pinned at full brightness for hours — that ages LEDs unevenly and you will notice colour shift within a year. Use dark backgrounds where possible, set a brightness schedule, enable auto-dimming, and train whoever closes the shop to switch it off properly.

    If I were spending my own money on an LED wall sourced in India today, I would pick a mid-tier supplier with a verifiable local install base, a named service engineer, and the willingness to put the full spec into the purchase order. I would spend the saved money on better LEDs, a proper spare kit on site, and decent content. I would not chase the absolute bottom quote, and I would not automatically pay extra for a big national brand unless the screen was mission-critical and downtime would cost more than the premium — which for a main-stage screen or a flagship store front, sometimes it does.

    Also, I would rather buy a smaller wall done right than a huge one done cheaply. A clean, well-calibrated 12-square-metre screen beats a patchy 30-square-metre one every single time, and audiences remember whether it looked sharp, not the exact dimensions. The hardware is a commodity now. What you are paying for is the person who picks up the phone when half the screen goes dark the day before load-in. Everything else is negotiable.
